Sunday 3rd April 2022

It's back!  Arguably the biggest (and best) race meeting in the RC calendar has finally returned!  It's been three long years since we held Autism Awareness II, and excitement for this meeting has been mounting for months!  Prizes have been donated and collected for the raffle; on-line raffles were held for various items; bidding took place for various events, and the team here at Brentwood have worked tirelessly to make today a success.

Sam was the driving force as usual, with Midge a close second, both running around like headless chickens for weeks, with the team following their lead, wherever possible.

ARRIVE AND DRIVE A STRETCH LIMO

Dan Jordan is a regular driver here a Brentwood.  He also builds and paints cars for fellow drivers.  He very kindly built a stretch limo, and then offered it to Autism Awareness, to be raffled as an arrive and drive, with the promise of it being painted in whatever colours the winner wished.  The raffle was held via Facebook, using the usual Bonus Ball lottery draw, and the winner was Dylan Ellis.  Unfortunately Dylan was unable to make the meeting, so did a deal with Pete Bowley, giving him the Arrive & Drive car.  Dan duly painted it for Pete and brought it along to the meeting.  And what an exceptional paint job he did!  Brilliant, and many thanks Dan for your contribution.

There were more on-line raffles, such as donated Alloy Banger Shells, but we'll get to those a little later.

THE LONG AWAITED MEETING IS HERE!

Bookings for the meeting flooded in, some worried they wouldn't get a booking, but here at Brentwood, we pride ourselves on never turning away a driver, no matter how crowded we are, and so the list increased by the hour!  On the morning of the meeting, the weather was kind to us, and the sun shone brightly.  Doors opened at 10am, but the car park was full by 9.30!  As the minutes ticked away, they started queuing in anticipation, all eager to get in and get racing!

Queing to get in.jpg

Pictures like this show that we must be doing something right at Brentwood!  Proud moment for Midge and the team.

Once the door was opened, it was like opening the Thames Barrier!  Drivers flooded in, familiar faces, regular drivers, visitors from other clubs, and faces new to Brentwood!  Everyone settled in, raffle tickets were being sold, and from the off, Cheryl and Toni Palmer were kept extremely busy in the shop and snack bar!

Official announcement's made, scrutineering and booking in completed; it was time to get racing!

GRAND PARADE

Our Grand Parade almost filled the entire track!  We had some exceptional livery on show, with many cars sporting the Autism Awareness emblem, the jigsaw puzzle piece.  A big congratulations to everyone, your efforts were fantastic!  Many thanks also to Jo and Stephen Hawker who were tasked with the almost impossible job of picking two winners for the Smart Car Awards (rather you than me!).  Their final decision settled on Harry Johnson and Owen Green; congratulations boys, well-deserved!

Oh WOW!  These kids know have to have fun!  I don't think any of them left the track not smiling!  25 ankle biters, all having the time of their lives!  Luke Poole raised the chequered flag at the end of the first heat, with a 3 lap lead.  He then battled for the win in the second round, but just lost out on splits to Lewis GreenLewis then went on to claim the win in the third round too.  Frankie Holland, McKenzie Webb and Harry Palmer were all there in the running, and all having loads of fun!  Poor Jimmy Roggerman had nothing but problems with his car and sadly failed to register any laps in any of the races, but he was still smiling (I blame "Big Phil's Race Prep").

Three great rounds for Oliver Whitby taking the first two wins, and 2nd place in round three!  His Dad, Kev Whitby was close behind, taking 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd.  Nigel Walker finished 5th in the first round, then moved up to 4th, and finally taking the win in the 3rd.  So the Great Yarmouth guys were dominating this heat, but the Brentwood lads, Dan Morgan, Billy Saunders, Dan Jordan and Divvy were hot on their heels!

Now that all the heats were completed, it was time to take a break and whilst Divvy and I sorted the finals (apologies for the few mistakes we made, but we were under pressure!), it was Sam and Midge's call with the main reason we were all here today, the fundraising!

A few weeks back Pete Bowley came up with a fund raising idea, collect bids to shave his beard!  He pitched the idea to Sam, who them launched the bidding on our Facebook page.  Pete had said he go ahead with the shave if the bids totalled £200.  In actual fact, the bids reached £320!  Many thanks to all who bid, thanks to you all, we now have a clean shaven Mr Bowley!

Pete's wife, Steph, took great pleasure in shaving her husband!  Because it was so thick, she had to trim up with scissors first, and then shave the remainder.  And now we have our Baby Face Bowley back again!

butterfly-autism-awareness-banner-logo-rainbow-day-month-112325814.jpg

Following Pete's lead, Jack Coveney then offered to shave his head!  Bids followed and Jack raised another £180!

Steph again stepped forward to do the honours, and pretty soon Jack was as bald as a coot!

Coveney's head shave.jpg

So as I said earlier, there were many things going on to raise money, including two on line raffles for Alloy Banger Shells that had been donated by Midge and Kenton Walker.

Jo and Stephen Hawker raised money with their mini trucks, where Jo drives around an RC truck she calls Clive, loaded with a bucket, collecting money for Autism Awareness, doing this throughout the year at all the shows they participate in.

Billy Saunders appealed via his Facebook page as well as badgering his work colleagues, asking family and friends for donations, and raised more money to add to the fund.

Donations flooded in from around the country.  Many other clubs sent donations, raffle items, vouchers etc, all to help this worthy cause, and words simply cannot express how grateful we all are to each and every one for their selfless generosity.  They included donations from - Sam Warman, RAW Models, Mardave, Alan Clarke, Wendy Townsend, Dan Jordan, Tammy Farquhar, Danni Edwards, Active Scale Models, The Flack Family, Graeme Daborn, Bad Ass Racing, Alec Quarman, Gill Goldstone, Nicola Suttling, Kamtec, Simon, Vicky and Abigail Alexander, Midge's Spares and Shells, Terry Ratcliffe, NEORC, Sam's Custom Designs, Brentwood RC Raceway, Ktech Signs, Billy Saunders, Ian Noble & Jonny Kelly, Tracie Lester, Mark Want, Mark Thompson, Stephen Holland, Jo & Stephen Hawker, Ian "Ockie" Burdett, Richard Francis, P & P Groundworks, and The Roggerman Family.  If I've missed anyone, please accept my deepest apologies.

Raffles prizes included a laptop, Car Stand, Prosecco, Family entry to Stansted Race Track, Free racing meetings at Brentwood RC Raceway & NEORC, Vouchers for getting shells sign written, vouchers for free stickers, Resin Dream Catcher, a large selection of ABS body shells, Little Tikes Car, Personalised Gift Voucher, Chocolate Cars, Spares galore, a selection of Easter Eggs, Alloy Shells, Glitter Glass & Bottle of Wine, Mini-Truck shell, Plush toys, DVDs, £50 Harvester voucher, Scentsy Warmer, Signed Stock Car Driver book, Handbag & Smellies, Charger, Brandy Set, Hat & Gloves set, Cup & Coaster, Candles, Board Game, and a Brentwood RC Raceway Hat.  Again, apologies if I've missed anything.

A fantastic array of prizes from a large selection of donators, thank you all so much, and thank you to everyone who dug deep in their pockets to buy raffle tickets; we all understand how difficult times are lately.

An extremely pleased, if somewhat surprised, Oliver Holmes took the win in the B Final, with an amazing 14 lap lead over Adam Brown, with Ian Friday finishing in 3rd place.  The guys were having so much fun, their 8 minute time limit was up before Oliver could complete the full scheduled 60 laps!

In the A Final, the racing was fast and furious, but chaotic, with 38 cars all vying to lift the winners trophy!  Koonta was first across the line with a 10 lap lead, to become Autism Awareness Champion 2022; congratulations Koonta, a great race!  Kev Whitby took 2nd place from Sleepy on splits, with Neil Higgins finishing in 4th place and crossing the line to take 5th was Nigel Walker.  An excellent days racing in the Bangers today, with some exceptional finishes and some awesome wrecking!  Well-done everyone, you all did us proud!

Fantastic racing from all you guys today, so good to such a large number of 1300's grace the track and provide some superb entertainment, a real joy to witness!  Many thanks to all who raced today, so good to see Juniors faring just as well as the Seniors!

1300 Stock Car Winners.jpg

Sam also gave a couple of special awards too; the Top Junior trophy was awarded, not for the top scoring points, but rather for someone who, despite his difficulties, was considered by many as the hardest tryer today, Ayden Pike.  Congratulations Ayden, so very well deserved!  You certainly earned your reward today!

And the Best Entertainer award went to none other than Owen Dack!  His enthusiasm for the sport, especially the wrecking, is infectious, and you only have to watch the video taken of Owen during the Finals to see just how enthusiastic he gets!  A great character in the RC world, loved by many, and a great entertainer!  He had the whole club in stitches!  Congratulation Owen, certainly well deserved!

To finish the day with a bang, we had the usual DD.  This was manic!  The track was littered with wreckage and as the hits went in, the roof was raised!  Over half an hour later, last Junior running was Luke Poole, and last Senior was Craig Eltham, congratulations boys, that was hard work!

So there you have it folks, Autism Awareness III was a huge success, and a fantastic day of racing, wrecking, prize winning, and great entertainment!  To date, the meeting has raised a little over £2,600!  How fantastic is that?  Give yourselves a huge pat on the back, as each and everyone of you played your part!

A huge thank you has to go to Sam and Midge for all their efforts, organisation, and dedication, without whom, none of this would have been possible.  Many thanks to Cheryl and Toni Palmer for working so hard in the shop, keeping us fed and watered, and selling the spares to keep the cars running!

Of course, thank you to the Brentwood Crew for all playing their part, working together to keep this day running smoothly.

And last, but not least, a massive thank you to all who came today, dug deep in their pockets, and supported this fantastic meeting!  Roll on Autism Awareness IV, 2023!

The final words have to come from you guys, here are some of the comments that we have received after todays meeting....
