THE BATTLE OF THE ESSEX GIANTS!

19th November 2016

So tonight saw round 2 of the Essex Battle, Brentwood Vs CCORC.  Chelmsford had won the 1st leg back in August at their home track, which gave them a lead of 188 points, leaving Brentwood with a lot of work to do tonight!  With the weather turning bitter cold this weekend, Midge kindly hired a marquee, complete with lighting and halogen heaters to accommodate the large number of drivers, which proved to be very useful!  Thank you Midge!

HEAT ONE

BRENTWOOD – 12 Christian Barber, 77 Josh Mackey, 115 Sonny Holtom, 375 Taylor-Jay Liles, 888 Robert Pinnell

CHELMSFORD – 07 Finnley McNichol, 121 Sam Davis, 123 Lewis Caunter, 174 Cameron Butcher, 183 Shaye Hunter

ROUND ONE – Both Shaye and Josh got off to a flying start, with Shaye taking the lead and Josh tucking in behind and staying with him all the way.  Shaye took it all the way to the finish, with Josh just behind on splits, just 100th of a second separated them!  Third place went to Robert, 3 laps down, with Finnley in 4th and Taylor in 5th.  Sonny came home in 6th place, with Sam in 7th, Lewis in 8th, Cameron in 9th and Christian 10th.

Time for the adults now (and I use the term Adults very lightly!).  As the heats changed each round, I’ll just list the full teams in one go.  For the first round, the drivers were listed for the heats in the order of booking.  For round 2, we listed each team in order of highest points scored, then took the top half for one heat and the bottom half for the other heat.  For round three, again by the points scored, we took the top 6 and bottom 6 points scorers, then the middle place drivers together.  For the final round, we took every other driver by points scored.  Hope that’s clear!

DD

This was the last chance to collect any points for their team, with 20 points on offer for the winner, and 20 points on offer for the last junior running.  By this time, quite a few had already braved the rain and headed home, some scheduled to make the trip to Bicester in the morning for the 2L Banger World Final.  But despite that, there was still a respectable field of drivers, all wanting to take those final points!  The DD was the usual crash fest, with scores being settled all around the track!  One by one, they dropped like flies, leaving Shaye to take the junior points for Chelmsford and Divvy to take the winning points for Brentwood.

So, time to add the points up and reveal the final scores

BRENTWOOD – 1121 points        CHELMSFORD – 1230 points.

This has been a really great competition, both at the first leg at Chelmsford, and the 2nd leg here at Brentwood.  Congratulations to Chelmsford for deservedly raising the winners’ plaque, and congratulations to Brentwood on being such gracious competitors.  The banter and rivalry between the two teams has been second to none!  The sportsmanship between all drivers was exceptional, with rivals helping each other to ensure they got onto the track.  Win or lose, these two great clubs have shown just how a competition such as this should be played!  Exceptional!  Well done everyone!  Bring on the return match in 2017!

Also out tonight were the Drift Bangers and Reliant Robins, the final outing for both formulas for what had been a brilliant first year here at Brentwood.

DRIFT BANGERS

HEAT ONE – 29 Chris Conn, 37 Terry “Turbo” Hall, 51 Dan Barrell, 77 Josh Mackey, 81 Craig “Hooligan” Cheverall, 366 Karl “Simba” McDowell, 375 Taylor-Jay Liles, 676 Bob Beswick

ROUND ONE – As always, there was some terrific, skillful racing from the guys in this formula.  Bob took the lead from the start and battled with Turbo to retain it!  Eventually, they crossed the line for a photo finish, with the win going to Bob, just!  Hooligan came home in 3rd place, just one lap behind, with Dan taking 4th place, one lap down on his team mate.  Chris and Josh battled for 5th place, with an amazingly close finish, Chris taking the place with a time of 204.47, and Josh having to settle for 6th with a time of 204.57!  How close was that?!!!!!!!!  Simba completed 26 laps to finish in 7th place, and Taylor came home in 8th place with 16 laps.

ROUND TWO – Another great battle for the win between Bob and Turbo, with Turbo just having the edge and pushing Bob into 2nd place.  Josh came home in 3rd, with Hooligan finishing in 4th place.  Dan crossed the line in 5th place, having pushed Chris into 6th on splits, and bringing up the rear to take 7th place was Simba.

ROUND THREE – Turbo battled for the lead once more, but this time it was with Josh.  Age and experience won through and took Turbo across the finish line in 1st place, with Josh following to take 2nd.  Chris and Hooligan battled for 3rd place and finished on splits, Chris 3rd and Hooligan 4th.  Dan had a mighty battle with Bob, with them crossing the finish line together, Dan just 000.10 in front of Bob!  Simba came home in 7th place, with Taylor taking 8th.

HEAT TWO – 71 Dylan ”Bellend” Ellis, 125 Nathan Webb, 165 Richie “Dickie Boy” Jarrard, 203 Jack Booker, 319 Daz Fuller, 590 Mickey Galloway, 777 Harry “Harrybo” Ovens

ROUND ONE – Daz got off to a flying start, took the lead and held it to the end to take the chequered flag!  Bellend came home in 2nd place, two laps down.  3rd place went to Nathan, with Mickey taking 4th place.  Harrybo beat Dickie Boy across the line on splits to take 5th place, and Jack was awarded 7th place after completing just 2 laps.

ROUND TWO – First across the line and taking the win for this one was Nathan, whilst Daz and Dylan battled behind him for 2nd place.  Daz eventually won and Bellend had to settle for 3rd.  Having sorted his car out, or rather, Dad sorting his car out, Jack made up for lost points and came across the line in 4th place.  Where would he be without his chief mechanic, eh Ian?  Mickey finished in 5th place with Harrybo taking 6th and Dickie Boy finished 7th.

ROUND THREE – A fantastically close race, this one, with 1st Nathan, 2nd Daz and 3rd Bellend all finishing on splits!  Also finishing on splits, Mickey just had the edge on Jack to take 4th place, and Harrybo and Dickie Boy also finished on splits, with Harrybo taking 6th place and dickie Boy taking 7th.

B FINAL – Taylor and Harrybo failed to make it to the track, leaving just five cars out to race for this one.  Chris and Dickie Boy battled for 4th place, Dickie Boy creeping just an inch in front of Chris as they crossed the line.  Dan completed 27 laps to finish in 3rd place, with the battle for first between Jack and Simba bringing victory for Jack, pushing Simba down to 2nd place.

A FINAL – The final of the last drift points meeting of the season was an extremely close and hard run race.  Eight drivers out, and just 4 laps separated 1st and 8th places!  Mickey 6th, Josh 7th and Nathan 8th, all finished on 26 laps.  Bob and Hooligan both finished on 28 laps, with Bob just ahead to take 4th and Hooligan 5th.  Dylan came home in 3rd place with 29 laps, not such a Bellend now, eh Dylan?  Turbo and Daz battled throughout the race for the lead, which resulted in them finishing on splits with 30 laps, Daz just that touch in front to take the win!

Congratulations to all who have made the drifts an enjoyable championship throughout the year.  Checkout the points charts to see the final club championship result.

Last, but not least, we come to the Reliant Robins.  This is a great “Fun” formula, which has seen numbers increasing throughout the year.  Rumour has it, there are more Robins under construction for the 2017 season, let’s hope so!

RELIANT ROBINS

Taking part tonight – 50 Ross Mason, 51 Dan Barrell, 68 Jade Mason, 81 Craig “Hooligan” Cheverall, 257 Paul Workman, 383 Darren “Divvy” Goldberg, 511 Michael Collins

ROUND ONE – A great battle took place for the win of this one, with Michael getting very vocal, as always.  I do love listening to Michael when he’s racing; he really makes me laugh with his comments.  I especially love it when someone hits his car and he shout out “Oi, leave me alone!”  Cracks me up every time!  Anyway, Ross and Jade fared well on what I believe was their first outing in the Robins.  Dan and Michael finished on splits, with Dan taking the win and Michael finishing in 2nd place.  3rd went to Paul, a lap ahead of Hooligan in 4th place.  Divvy came home in 5th place, with Jade taking 6th and Ross taking 7th.

ROUND TWO – The smile was bigger than ever when Michael realised he’d crossed the finish in 1st place!  Dan took 2nd, Hooligan took 3rd and Paul took 4th, all on splits!  Divvy again came home in 5th place, with Ross beating his sister to 6th place, and Jade settling for 7th.

ROUND THREE – Another win for Michael made that smile even bigger!  Dan again settled for 2nd place, with Hooligan coming home in 3rd on splits from Paul.  Divvy yet again took 5th place, with Jade beating her brother once more to finish in 6th, and Ross having settling for 7th.

FINAL – Jade completed her debut with 14 laps to finish in 7th place, with Dan just one lap ahead to finish 6th.  Ross completed 21 laps to take 5th place, with Divvy moving up a place to finish 4th with 22 laps.  3rd place went to Paul, one lap down on the winner.  Michael had to settle for 2nd place, losing on splits to Hooligan, who was extremely happy to take the top slot!

Big congratulations to everyone who has taken part this year.  I know Midge and Co are very grateful for your continued support.  Head over to the points charts and see who’s lifting the trophies on 10th December!
